A human powered vehicle (10) comprises a drive gear (84) for driving driven wheel (50) rotatably mounted on frame (20), left and right pedals (60L, 60R) mounted on frame (20) reciprocally traveling in a substantially rectilinear path, and a transmission (80) connecting each pedal (60) with driven wheel (50) for converting the rectilinear motion of pedals (60) into rotary motion for propelling driven wheel (50). In a first embodiment, each pedal (60) includes a rack (66) and each transmission (80) includes a pinion (82) engaged with rack (66). In a second embodiment, drive belt (180) connects each pedal (60) to drive gear (84) such that the pedals (60) move simultaneously but in opposite directions. In a third embodiment, each pedal (60) is connected by connecting rod (130) to crank arm (32) on crank (30). |
