PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a high-reliability bar code reader for exactly detecting and decoding a bar code existent at any arbitrary position and in any arbitrary direction inside a document image, in which various background patterns exist. SOLUTION: A document is read, converted into a binary image by an image input means 1 and stored in an image storage means 2, the binary image is window-scanned by an M×M mask deciding means 3, an alternative pattern having a prescribed pitch is detected, a fine pattern in the binary image is removed by a fine graphic removing means 4, the pattern in the binary image is expanded for prescribed quantity by an expanding means 5, the pattern in the binary image is shrunk for prescribed quantity by a shrinking means 6, the pattern in the binary image is separated by an area deciding means 7, the position of bar code candidate area is recognized from a feature amount for each pattern, and the bar code is decoded from the phase relation between the feature amount and centroid position of bar included in the bar code candidate area by a decoding means 8.
