Organic compounds are reacted in presence of a catalyst containing 0.01-30 wt% ruthenium (Ru) as active metal, possibly together with sub-group I, VII or VIII metal(s), on a support (I) with an average pore diameter (PD) of at least 50 nm and a BET surface of not more than 30 m<2>/g, in which the ratio of active metal surface to support surface is less than 0.05. Also claimed are supported catalysts as above.
