<p>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a new pyrimidine compound useful as a component of liquid crystal compositions to be used in liquid crystal device, etc. SOLUTION: This new compound is shown by formula I [R1 and R2 are each a (halogen-substituted) 1-24c alkyl or 2-24C alkoxyalkyl, and may bear an asymmetric carbon atom; R3 is H or a 1-4C alkyl; Y1 is O or COO; Y2 is a single bond, O, COO, or OCO; X is OCO or OCH2 ; Ar is a (substituted) 1,4- phenylene, pyrindine-2,5-diyl or trans-1,4-cyclohexylene; (n) is 0, 1, etc.], e.g. 6-amidino-2-benzyloxynaphthalene hydrochloride. The compound of formula I is obtained by the following process: a 2-bromonaphthalene derivative of formula II (Z is a protecting group) as a starting material is reacted with copper cyanide, ammonia, a 1,3-diketone derivative, an alkylating agent, etc., successively in this order followed by deprotection into a compound of formula III, which, in turn, is reacted with a compound of the formula L-CH2 -Ar-Y2 -R2 (L is Cl, Br, I, etc.).</p> |
