A cable stripper has a blade (4) in a safety gap (3) to protect against damage. The blade has a cutting depth of only one millimetre so that cutting into the cable wires is prevented. A ring around the cable is cut so that a section of sleeve can be pulled off. The knife may be U-shaped, with the blade on a longer leg of the knife. The short leg serves as a retaining clip when placed e.g. in a trouser back pocket. On the short leg is a small triangular blade (5) which can slit the cable sleeve and strip the cable using a longitudinal cut.
