The input device has a circular disc 17 that is manually operated in the X and Y directions by the operator's fingers. A shaft 18 is integral with the disc and is supported in a ball 24 with a mass 20 at the lower end. Movement of the shaft results in force being applied to one or more pressure sensors 27 arranged as two orthogonal pairs. The force is applied via contact cylinders 25.
