Fuel injection system operation for IC engine

The IC engine (7) is supplied by fuel from a high pressure fuel reservoir (1) which is linked to the fuel tank by a fuel pump (3) and a fuel flow monitor (22). This provides a measure of the fuel input into the reservoir. The system monitors the return flow back into the fuel tank as well as the fuel flow through the injectors. The control system balances the two fuel flow rates and activates a warning if the difference is more than a set value ie. there is a fuel leak. The fuel flow to the injectors is determined by the injection pulse lengths and the pressure in the reservoir. A pressure control valve (9) on the reservoir returns excess fuel back into the fuel tank via a flow sensor (17). If a leak is detected the system can be set into a standby mode to allow the vehicle to be recovered.
