A large number of grabs, preferably in line, grip and release the plants. A driven spreader mechanism incorporates parallel oblong supports such as racks or sections of endless belts or chains, and to which grab members are fixed. Each support is driven in its lengthwise direction, so that the distance between the members can be varied to a predetermined pattern. The supports (16) are in pairs, and are coupled together so that on movement in their lengthwise direction they travel in opposite directions simultaneously and for the same distance. Each support can consist of an endless belt with first and second parallel runs. They can be driven by wheels of different circumferences, the ratio of the latter controlling the variation of the distances between the grabs.
