GAS ADSORBENT AND ITS PRODUCTION

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain an adsorbent having such a characteristic that the extent of equilibrium adsorption of oxygen is larger than that of nitrogen by interposing ions of mixed polynuclear hydroxide of Al and Si between layers of montmorillonite by an ion exchange reaction and heating the layers so that polynuclear oxide crosslinking is caused between the layers. SOLUTION: Ions of mixed polynuclear hydroxide of Al and Si are interposed between layers of a laminar silicate forming montmorillonite by an ion exchange reaction and the layers are crosslinked with mixed oxide of Al and Si by heating at about 300-700 deg.C in air to obtain the objective gas adsorbent having such a specific adsorbing characteristic that the adsorbent adsorbs more oxygen than nitrogen. When this gas adsorbent is used as an adsorbent for a pressure swing adsorption method (PSA), oxygen and nitrogen in air can be more effectively separated.
