The apparatus (1) includes a liquid crystal layer (7) realised through positive guest-host technology. The layer is transparent and is part of a brightness regulated flat filter slice of a display device. Provided with the layer is a cover glass (3) and a carrier layer (5), with the liquid crystal layer and a dye section (9) being provided between them. Transparent electrodes (13,15) are formed on either side of the layer and are activated by a control circuit (23).
