A process for reducing the noise from rail tracks, comprises placing mesh baskets on the outside and between the rails (1, 2), and filling them with sound damping or absorbing material. The mesh (3) is coarse and has a fine mesh mat attached to it, consisting of galvanised steel, stainless steel or plastic coated steel wires. The sound damping material consists of old rubber, slag, gravel, etc. The holder (B) is located between the rails and the damping members contact the rails.
