The method involves manufacturing prismatic alkaline storage cells with a rectangular cross-section. The electrode assembly is formed using a band (5) of nickel mat or nickel foam, on which an active mass is pasted to form the positive and negative electrodes (10,11). Several strips lying in the region of the electrode terminals (8) are left free. The band is then dried and calendered to the required thickness, and then separated into electrodes of the required width. The strips without active mass are partly pierced so that a connecting strip remains around the edge of one electrode. Then comes an alternating even coating of positive and negative electrodes so that the connecting strips lie on top of each other forming an electrode packet.
