The screw cutting lathe consists of a cage (5) containing a lead screw and a reversible ball nut (1,2) mounted on a collar (4) on which is cut a pinion which drives the gear train (8) which controls the series of pinions and discs (9-12, 10-13, 11-14). Each one of the discs contains a series of notches on their periphery such that the discs are calculated as a function of each series of pitches selected on the plate (41). The indexing finger (19) engages in one of the notches in the discs to stop the rotation of the nut thus driving the saddle (25) containing the threading tool. Once the stop (26) engages with a disengaging stud (42), the indexing finger (19) is disengaged, allowing the nut to rotate and the saddle to return the threading tool to its original position without having to stop the rotation of the lathe chuck.
