The present invention relates to an apparatus and method for removing coatings from metal surfaces. The coating is heated by electrical induction for a length of time sufficient to decrease the bond strength between the coating and the surface of the metal plate, but shorter than the time required to decompose the coating. The coating is then removed from the metal surface. The apparatus (10) for carrying out the removal of the coating comprises a power source (14), a transformer (16) connected to the power source by a flexible transmission cable, and a portable induction coil assembly (20) connected to the transformer by the flexible transmission cable. The apparatus can be moved manually across the metal surface or it may be moved by a remotely-operated utility vehicle (100) which magnetically attaches itself to metal surfaces. The utility vehicle (100) is comprised of a plurality of wheel (102) assembly means for moving the utility vehicle; steering means (122, 122A) coupled to each of the plurality of wheel assembly means for controlling the direction in which the utility vehicle moves; motor means (126) coupled to the steering means for driving the plurality of wheel assembly means so the utility vehicle can move; chassis means (104) coupled to the plurality of wheel assembly means for supporting the steering means (122, 122A) and the motor means (126); and magnetic case unit means (132) coupled to the plurality of wheel assembly means for attaching the utility vehicle to metal surfaces. |
