This plant reduces the volume of a wet sludge, or other moist waste material, using at least one filter press (15, 16) for mechanical pretreatment of the sludge. A sludge container (12), receives outgoing, volume-reduced sludge. There is a sludge drying system on an intermediate level (13) between that (14) of the filter press and that (11) of the sludge container (12). A recirculating air dryer (20) has a mobile, solids drying chamber (17) which connects to it. Pressed sludge falls via flaps (18) of the filter press, into the container, through its opened cover flaps (19), filling it. Emptying flaps (23) on the base of the drying chamber drop to release the product into the sludge container (12). Also claimed is the corresponding procedure to dry wet sludges or other wet wastes.
