The present device is directed to a height adjustable arm rest assembly (10) for use on a chair. According to one aspect of the device, the arm rest assembly includes a support member (12), an arm rest member (16), a locking mechanism attached to one of the support member and the arm rest member, and a substantially continuous engagement surface on the other of the support memb er and the arm rest member. The locking mechanism includes an actuation member (50), a link (80) connected to the actuation member, and a cam (94) pivotabl y connected to the link. The cam has a front portion (96) and a rear portion (98). The rear portion is received within a recess (100) in one of the suppo rt member and the arm rest member.
