PURPOSE: To increase deformation during driving with no fear of heating or electrolysis, by converting contractional displacement into other kinds of displacement when a field is applied to a polyurethane elastomer. CONSTITUTION: A polyurethane elastomer 1 has each electrode layer 2 on both sides with different thickness, and a lengthwise rigidity pitch line is dislocated slightly from a center of its thickness to provide curvature displacement. A polyurethane-elastomer actuator is fixed at its lower end, and a voltage is applied to both electrodes. When an electric field is applied, lengthwise contractional displacement is generated, and thereby displacement in a given direction to increase a surface area is caused, because its original volume is kept constant in the polyurethane elastomer. Since the electrode layer 2B is made thicker than the electrode layer 2A to restrict the displacement of the polyurethane elastomer 1, the side face covered with the electrode layer 2A is displaced more than the other side face. In this case, the displacement is applied in a way that the electrode layer 2A is enlarged so that the upright elastomer is bent to the front side.
