Hydrophilic copolymer is prod. by (a) forming a copolymerisable mixt. of 75 - 92% MMA and 8 - 25% acrylic acid (b) transporting the mixt. into a mould (c) heating the mixt. to 40 - 65 degrees C (d) removing the copolymer with a soln. contng. 0.1 - 5 wt.% base for not longer than 48 hrs. The method is directed to the prodn. of contact lenses which combine the good optical props. of acrylics with non-irritation to corneal surfaces without adversely affecting clarity or increasing the risk of bacterial infection.
