A method for determining distance, whereby an image area comprising the said object is captured by means of an objective lens arrangement (1a) belonging to the optical means (1), to achieve at least two, preferably three separate two-dimensional images of essentially the same size and having essentially the same image area and light intensity, whereby for capturing each image a fixed focusing distance (A, B, C) is being used differing essentially from the other images, whereafter the distance of the object is determined by comparing each of the preferably three images being focused at differing focusing distances (A, B, C) with each other by means of the data processing unit (2) in respect with the object, such as with each image point, numerically, such as by interpolation or extrapolation based on the image information (Hp1x,y, Hp2x,y, Hp3x,y) concerning the images. The invention relates to an image capturing device applying the method, also, and an advantageous embodiment for use of the same.
