PURPOSE: To obtain an easy-to-handle oxygen sensor having simple structure by measuring the conductivity of a gas to be detected using rear earth chromite and then calculating the partial pressure of oxygen. CONSTITUTION: The oxygen sensor employs rear earth chromite represented by a general formula M1-x M'x Cr1-y Ny O3 , where M is Y mixed or not mixed with lanthanoids at an arbitrary ratio, M' is at least one of Ca, Sr and Ba, N is at least one of Mg, Al, Mn, Fe, etc., (x and y are mol.%). The rear earth chromite is then sintered and cut into size of 5mm wide×2mm thick×30mm long and a platinum wire is wound to form a sensor 1. The sensor 1 is used in an atmosphere of 800 deg.C or above and the conductivity of gas is measured by means of a voltmeter 6 and ammeter 7 fixed to the platinum wire. Finally, the partial pressure of oxygen is calculated from the conductivity according to a formula ;σ=1/[K1 +K2 .(Po2 )K<3> ]... (where,σis conductivity, Po2 is partial pressure of oxygen, K1 , K2 and K3 are coefficients).
