The coolant runs downwards, preferably to the lower end of a vertically rising stretch of the convection circuit (3) between a coupling in window and a coupling out window for the light beam.The cooler (1) preferably has a large cooling body, with cooling ribs or the like to disperse heat energy from the coolant. The windows for coupling the beam in and out are preferably sealed by transparent panes (7,8) which filter out the heat radiation by absorption or a reflective coating.
