CONTINUOUS CASTING OF HIGH-CARBON STEEL

PURPOSE: To provide a method for continuous casting of thin slabs of high- carbon steels having a specific carbon content. CONSTITUTION: This method is for the continuos casting of the high-carbon steels having the carbon content greater than 0.50% in order to produce the thin slabs. In this method, the taper of the mold at least in its first segment is required to be between 1.5% and 4% per meter and the frequency of oscillation of the mold to be between 180 and 350 oscillations per minute with a travel upward and downward between±5 mm and 5 mm, with a total travel of 10 to 18 mm. The cooling in an initial cooling period is extremely intense and the time in the transient state at the time of start-up of the casting is reduced by 1/3 to 1/4 as compared to the normal times of the transient stage of start-up.
