The reinforcing element, e.g. for a seal used in motor vehicle manufacture, consists of a strip (1) of a rigid material having a series of solid transverse sections (11) separated by spaces (10) and joined together by bridges (12) at their edges. The bridges lie along the lateral edges (1a) of the strip and are separated from one another transverse slits (13) which divide the lateral sections of the solid sections (11) into at least two portions (11a,11b), one of which (11a) is able to deform when the strip is stretched, being narrower than the other portion. The reinforcing element can be folded to give a U-shaped cross-section before or after it has been coated with the elastomer or plastomer material. |
