Each stack (10) is transported and its enclosing strap (11) cut through and removed, esp. in conjunction with a packing machine. The knife (23) is inserted at the upright portion of the strap and between sheets at the stack top. The strap is cut through immediately below its top transverse portion (14) by relative movement between knife and stack in the lengthwise direction of the upright portion (12) of the strap. Pressure can be exerted on the top of the stack and/or the transverse portion of the strap at the side furthest from the knife. This causes the top sheets and/or the transverse portion of the strap to lift slightly at the side towards the knife.
