The air cushion for sliding or rotary bodies e.g. a gyrocompass has a chamber which is fed with compressed air. In the walls of this chamber, at the point where the air cushion is to be produced, are through apertures for the air, this area (7) of the chamber (9) walls being made of porous material, e.g. by sintering. The porous wall section can be of sintered glass, ceramic or synthetic material, or it can be constructed from porous filter substances based on glass, ceramic or plastic. The porosity and strength of the wall section through which the air passes is such that the pressure within the chamber is double that required for supporting the sliding or rotary body.
|
