Vehicle IC engine with variable cylinder control operation

The engine is divided into at least two groups of cylinders each with a separate inlet manifold, throttle valve, exhaust gas recycling valve etc. When full torque is required, both cylinder groups operate normally. When low torque is required, e.g. for cruising, one of the cylinder groups is free-running, with no fuel inlet. To prevent sudden torque changes the changeover is progressive with the throttle valve for one group progressively opened while that for the other group is progressively closed. The group which is progressively closed down switches to fully closed when the reduction reaches a set proportion of what was set just prior to torque reduction. The exhaust gas recycling valves for the two groups are progressively changed at the same time.
