Automatic determination of topology of ATM networks

The method allows the determn. of the topology of ATM networks in which several ATM exchanges and several ATM terminals are freely connected to each other. Each ATM exchange or terminal has a stored exchange identification code. This shows whether this ATM exchange or terminal is an ATM exchange and the code exchanges with neighbouring ATM exchanges or terminals. By this communication, each ATM exchange and terminal determines for each port whether its port is connected to an ATM exchange or terminal. The results of the determn. determines whether a network node interface connects two ATM exchanges together or a subscriber network interface connects an ATM exchange and a terminal together. As a result of the determn. a protocol is established which corresp. to the respective interfaces.
