PURPOSE:To produce bisphenols by coupling reaction of phenols in the presence of a catalyst of a copper salt supported on a carrier through a simplified process. CONSTITUTION:A phenol such as 2-naphthol is subjected to the coupling reaction in the presence of a catalyst (alumina-copper sulfate) in an organic solvent (chlorobenzene) at 60-300 deg.C, preferably in an atmosphere of an oxygen-containing gas or an inert gas. After the reaction, the catalyst is filtered off, the reaction mixture is concentrated. The preferred catalyst is prepared by allowing 100 pts.wt of a carrier to support 0.1-20 pts.wt. of a copper salt and 0.01-1.0 equivalent amount of the copper salt is preferred to 1 mole of the phenols. The bisphenol is useful as an antioxidant, a modifier for synthetic resins such as polyester or polycarbonate, as an intermediate for dyes, medicines, agrochemicals, as a photographic material and, particularly as an agent for optical resolution of sulfoxides and amine derivatives. |
