A numerical control system is provided for controlling a machine tool comprising control means (12) and an external portable storage means (1) for storing operation data. Read/write means (20) are provided for reading data from and writing data into the external storage means (1). A parameter data memory (80) is provided for storing parameters which can be changed by an operator. Such parameters include cutting program parameters or tool data. The control means (12) are adapted to manage the parameter data by assigning parameter names (81) and parameter dates of creation (82) to each parameter. The parameter names (81) and dates (82) are stored in a parameter data memory (80).
