In the proposed roasted charge cooler (5), instability caused by unusually heavy accumulation of material can be prevented by injecting (14) water into the cooler outgoing air (13) which is fed into the furnace (1) as the secondary air supply. This should be done in the inlet region (4) of the cooler (5), depending on the temperature and/or pressure of the secondary air in the port-end of the furnace.
