Repairing defects in protecting coatings of machinery

A method of repairing defects (1,4,10,11,12) in the exterior surface (3) of machinery operating in power plants e.g. turbines, etc. which are exposed to hot/corrosive gases and which are therefore coated with a protective layer (2), commences by grinding out the fault using a spherical tool, penetrating the underlying metal (15) if necessary (8,16,17,18). A plug (5) of metallic compound of identical chemical composition to the protective layer (2) and of suitable size is united with the component under repair (2,3) by resistive or friction welding, hard soldering etc. under pressure, externally contoured and the component heat-treated.
