The present invention teaches a combined air/liquid separator and recovery tank for use on a hot water carpet extractor. The tank has a lid assembly composed of a hollow top plate 552 and a bottom plate 554 welded together to form a plenum. Dividing wall 562 separates this into an inlet chamber 558 and an exit chamber 560. In use air with entrained dirt and liquid enters chamber 558 through aperture 564 and descends via hole 566 into tank 570. After depositing its entrained matter, the air passes upwards through aperture 568 into the exit chamber 560, from where it is sucked through hole 570 through stand-pipe 572 to the fan. <IMAGE>
