A vehicle (1) following a trajectory (2) along the slopes of a mountain is provided with a compass (4) and spirit level (6) which measure the azimuth (5) and two altitude angles. An odometer (9) provides information about the distance travelled. A digital map (11) stores information regarding the normal orientation of the terrain. Using distance travelled and the azimuth angles a number of positions (31-36) along a segment of the trajectory (30) are calculated. These values together with the altitude angles are then used to determine the orientation of the steepest slope relative to the vehicle position. The information is then compared with the data stored in the digital map.
