PRODUCTION OF LIQUID CRYSTAL ELEMENT

PURPOSE:To prevent the damage of a liquid crystal element caused by a liquid circulating at high speed. CONSTITUTION:The liquid crystal element is constituted by holding a ferroelectric liquid crystal between two sheets of a large area substrate provided with an electrode and subjected to orientation and is produced by obtaining a monodomain layer of chiral smectic phase by slowly cooling the ferroelectric liquid crystal from a phase of a higher temp. side than the chiral smectic phase. The chiral smectic phase of the ferroelectric liquid crystal is formed by lowering the temp. of the liquid while dipping a protective vessel 12 holding the liquid crystal element 1 into a liquid 10 circulating at a temp. corresponding to the phase of the higher temp. side than the chiral smectic phase.
