HIGHWAY BARRIER APPARATUS AND METHOD

An energy absorbing roadway barrier (10) and method of making the barrier. The barrier includes an elongate core (11) of reinforced high-density concrete having barrier anchor members (14, 16, 17) attached from the elongated core to a position for anchoring the barrier. An elongate barrier portion is formed around the elongated core and around the core anchor members. The barrier portion is formed of lightweight concrete using lightweight resilient polymer pieces formed in a cement and water mixture and an interlock portion (30, 31, 32) is formed on each end of the barrier. The lightweight concrete polymer pieces may be pieces of chopped up vulcanized rubber, such as used tires or recycled polystyrene.
