A method and a device for transporting a material web (13 or 32) are described, in which a material web is transported by means of a feed-roller pair (7, 22) along a transport path (1, 2) into the cutting zone (3) of a circulating knife (38) interacting with a stationary knife (39). To interrupt the material web transport for reasons of specific operating conditions, in the last operating cycle before stoppage it is first accelerated to an excess velocity and then brought to a stop in the next step. On restarting the same web or starting a different material web (32), on bobbin exchange, the material web is first accelerated to an excess velocity in the first operating cycle after the stoppage and then slowed to the intended operating velocity, so that the first cut takes place already in register at operating velocity. This procedure has the advantage that reject material is reduced because no unrequired web sections are produced.
