Prodn. of a spheroidal graphite cast iron with improved mechanical properties involves subjecting a cast iron of compsn. (by wt.) 3-4% C, 1.7-3% Si, 0.1-1.5% Mn, 0-4% Ni, 0-1.5% Cu, 0-0.5% Mo and balance Fe to: (a) an inter-critical treatment at temp. (T1) between Ac1+20 deg.C and Ac3 for a time (t1); (b) cooling to a temp. (T2) in the upper bainitic region; (c) holding at temp. (T2) for a time (t2); and (d) cooling to ambient temp. Also claimed is spheroidal graphite cast iron with improved mechanical properties having the above compsn. and pref. having a structure of two types of ferrite and of austenite.
