PURPOSE:To drop a driving voltage and to improve the yield of production by subjecting one of a pair of substrates to a rubbing orientation treatment and not subjecting the other substrate to the rubbing orientation treatment. CONSTITUTION:The upper substrate 1, liquid crystal molecules 2, electrodes 3, the lower substrate 4 and a power source 5 are main constituting elements. The rubbing direction 6 is shown as a arrow. Only the upper substrate 1 side is subjected to the rubbing and the lower substrate 4 side is not subjected to the rubbing. Liquid crystal molecules spontaneously attain twisted nematic orientation of about 90 deg. and function as an LCD even if the rubbing treatment one side is omitted by using the twisted nematic liquid crystals set in the twist angle of the liquid crystals at 80 to 100' by compounding chiral molecules. The rubbing orientation treatment of the other substrate which is heretofore executed is omitted, by which defects, such as generation of particles and electrostatic breakdown occurring in the rubbing treatments, are decreased. |
