A spray tip (20) having a cylindrical chamber (30) communicating with the liquid supply and formed with a cross-slot (34) which intersects the chamber (30) at a location intermediate the ends thereof for defining a discharge orifice (31), a deflector surface (32) on a downstream side of the discharge orifice (31) for directing liquid in a direction transverse to the axis of the chamber (30), and a pocket (38) extending downstream of the deflector surface (32). Various embodiments include the spray tip (20) having a pre-orifice (42) smaller in diameter than the chamber (30) adjacent an upstream end thereof, the chamber (30a) being disposed with its axis at an angle to the vertical and the cross-slot (34a) extending upwardly in vertical relation for defining a vertical deflection surface (32a), the spray tip (20d) having a wear resistant metal insert (72), and the chamber (30) extending horizontally and having a long dimension which is greater than the correspondingly extending dimension of an opening (87) through a retention cap (22f).
