A method for reducing the noise in a video signal (S1), particularly when replaying a video signal stored on a video recorder, in which a window is defined around each signal value P(0, 0, 0) as starting signal value, a mean deviation ( sigma ) of the signal values in the window is determined and the output signal value is averaged with those adjacent signal values in the window which are within limit values (So, Su) dependent on the mean deviation ( sigma ) determined, is improved in its effectiveness by at least one threshold value (a1, a2) being determined for the mean deviation ( sigma = a/2), the limit values (So, Su) for a mean deviation which is below the threshold value (a1, a2) being set with values (b) dependent on the mean deviation ( sigma ) found, and the limit values (So, Su) for a mean deviation ( sigma ) which is above the at least one threshold value (a1, a2) being determined with an essentially constant preselected maximum value (b2). <IMAGE>
