PURPOSE:To display the discover location of corresponded information when the user of an explanatory note inputs an inquiry about the information within the character string by using an automatic semantic pattern recognition. CONSTITUTION:A computer 52 Preserving a data structure expressing the character string of a natural language is included, a data structure is made a tree structure having nodes and each node expresses information from the locations related to the character string. The node of the high-order level of the tree structure expresses the classification of general information. The node of the just low-order level within the tree structure expresses further specified low-order classification in the general classification of the information that the ancestor expresses by the high-order level. An inquiry is faired to an inquiry data structure which is morphologically similar to the node structure expressing the character string. The inquiry data structure is compared with each node within the tree structure. When the degree of similarity between the inquiry and the nodes is higher than a prescribed threshold, taking the degree of the similarity between the ancestor of the nodes and the inquiry into consideration, the related location of the nodes is displayed as the location including the information corresponding to the inquiry on a video monitor 53.
