Improved thread winding and advancing reels

[Class 120(ii)] [Also in Group XXX] A thread winding and advancing reel comprises an endless belt which can be bent in the plane of its surface and which is mounted so that it will move substantially in the path of a helix for at least half a revolution and during the remainder of the revolution will be depressed within the surface containing the helical path and, while depressed, be subjected to a lateral movement so that on recovering from the depression the belt will occupy the position from which it commenced its helical movement. As shown, the convolutions A, B, C, D of a thread are carried by a flexible belt formed of cross-pieces 12 (Fig. 3) flexibly connected to chains 1 by rods 13 mounted in rubber sleeves 14. The chains 1 pass around sprockets 9-2 and 91-21, Fig. 2, so positioned that the belt follows a helical path from X to Y in the direction of arrow 11, and then moves laterally around a sprocket 10 below the helical path back to its original position at X. The centres of the sprockets are on lines parallel to the axis of the helical path, but the axes of the sprockets are set at a slight angle to the line of centres so that the belt meets and leaves the sprockets tangentially. Strips 12 are curved on the outer surface and may be composed of wood, metal, synthetic resins or resin-bonded laminates. An alternative construction of belt consists of two pliable bands of polyvinyl chloride (in place of chains 1) to which rigid strips of polyvinyl chloride composition are welded via short sections of pliable polyvinyl chloride composition. In any case, the strips are attached to the chains or bands at such a level that the outer surface of the belt travels at a constant speed, whatever its curvature. Rollers or pulleys may replace the sprocket wheels: rollers may have the cage structure described in Specification 589,979. The rollers, pulleys or sprockets, instead of being set angularly, may be arranged in sets with collinear axes in which case the belt is made free to slip sideways and means are provided for forcing it sideways. These means may consist in flanges fitted to the rollers, or in guiding rollers with their axes perpendicular to the belt surface; or the teeth of sprocket wheels may exert a suitable lateral pressure on the chain links. Where the rollers or pulleys are arranged in sets, the path of the belt may be that of a conical helix. Specification 394,216 also is referred to.
