PURPOSE:To efficiently amplify a short light pulse without changing the pulse time width thereof, by determining the length of an optical fiber for amplification to a particular length. CONSTITUTION:In a light amplifier, a short light pulse signal incident through an optical connector from an optical waveguide path 9a side is amplified in an optical fiber for amplification 4 to a desired level, and output through an optical isolator 11 and an optical connector. Expansion of the pulse time width or disturbance of the pulse waveform basically occurs in proportion with the propagation length. By setting the length of the optical fiber for amplification 4 to 1m or less when amplifying a short light pulse, the core structure can be changed in the range of a very small wavelength-dispersion. As a result, the core diameter can be made small to increase the gain coefficient, whereby the short light pulse can be efficiently amplified with little change in the pulse time width thereof. |
