The seal is made from an elastic material and has at least one projecting seal lip (8,9) on one or both of its faces (6,7), and a recess (10,11) beneath each lip to receive the lip at least partially when it is pressed inwards by a sealing surface on an adjacent component. The seal material has a Shore hardness of between 50 and 70, and preferably 60, and comprises an elastomer such as an ethylene-propylene terpolymer, a polyurethane, or a nitrile. The seal can be annular in shape with a polygonal inner edge, and the seal lips can be inclined relative to its upper and lower surfaces and ring-shaped.
