Light source for electronic video endoscope

The light source uses a lamp operated via a network stage coupled via an optical fibre cable (5a,5b) to the video endoscope which uses a CCD image converter. The lamp provides a colour sequential light output, the CCD image converter providing corresponding colour component images, combined to provide a full image of the examined area, displayed on a monitor (6).The power supplied to the lamp is reduced during the image converter read-out phase and is increased during the illumination phase, the mean power over the full image phase being held below the network power level.
