Underlayer of dye-donor element for thermal dye transfer systems.

A dye-donor element for thermal dye transfer comprises a support with a dye layer contg. an image dye dispersed in polymeric material. The polymeric material is coated from an aq. soln. and consists essentially of gelatine. The element also has at least one underlayer consisting of a swellable polymer located between the support and the dye layer. Also claimed are a process of forming a thermal dye transfer image and a thermal dye transfer assembly. Pref., swellable polymer is gelatine present in conc. of 0.54-11glm2. Pref. the dye donor element also contains an IR-absorbing material.
