PURPOSE:To provide a DNA fragment containing gene of caffeine demethylase, a bacterial strain transformed with a recombinant DNA integrated with the DNA fragment, and a use of the strain. CONSTITUTION:A DNA fragment containing the gene of caffeine demethylase produced by a bacterial strain of the genus Pseudomonas having caffeine metabolic activity and a new bacterial strain of the genus Pseudomonas transformed with a recombinant DNA integrated with the DNA fragment. 3-Methyl-7- alkylxanthine useful as an important intermediate for pharmaceuticals can be produced by the use of the bacterial strain.
