The system is for fastening a wooden capping strip (10) on the edge of a step in a building. The capping strip is fastened by screws (34) to the vertical face (30) of an angle iron forming the edge of the step. The screws extend towards the outside surface of the wooden capping strip. The top surface (14) of the capping strip extends very slightly above the top of the plastics material covering the tread surface of the step, and lopes down gently (24) to the edge of the plastics. The plastics material is laid on top of a layer of fibrous material (42) which extends into a groove (28) near the top of the capping strip.
