PURPOSE:To obtain the subject compound at a relatively low temperature in a short reaction time and high yield at a low cost in a state to facilitate the post-treatment by reacting hydroquinone with a 6-30C alpha-olefin at a specific ratio using a specific amount of activated clay as a catalyst. CONSTITUTION:The objective di-sec-alkyl-substituted hydroquinone compound (e.g. the compounds of formula I and formula II) can be produced by reacting hydroquinone with a 6-30C alpha-olefin. This reaction is preferably carried out by using activated clay as a catalyst in an amount of >=30wt.% (preferably >=80wt.%) based on the hydroquinone at a reaction temperature of <=150 deg.C, especially 90-130 deg.C. The di-see-alkyl-substituted hydroquinone compound is useful as a photographic chemical, polymerization inhibitor, stabilizer, etc. |
