[Also in Division F2] Transmission belts having internal teeth and which also may have external teeth are produced by wrapping a rubberized fabric around a drum having longitudinal grooves to form the teeth, conforming the wrapping to the grooves by means of removable inserts, covering it with windings of inextensible cord material, removing the inserts and then covering it with an elastomer, inserting the assembly into an elastic sheath of sufficient length to cover the assembly, creating a vacuum between the sheath and drum in an autoclave to draw the rubberized fabric into the teeth cavities and impregnate the belt with the elastomer which is then cured by steam while retaining the vacuum. On removal from the sheath, the belt may be cut into individual units as desired. The sheath may also be cavitied for formation of external teeth on the belt, and an additional rubberized fabric layer may be applied over the assembly before covering with the sheath.</p> |
